Practical notes

Getting there and away

Saint-Amand-sur-Fion has no station. Vitry-le-François station, about 1 km off the route some 13 km in, has trains to Paris, Reims, Strasbourg, Metz and Dijon and is the last railway before Bar-sur-Aube, three stages on. Saint-Rémy-en-Bouzemont has no station or bus we could confirm.

What the season does

April to October, partial shade. At 34.9 km this is a long day, best started early in summer; Vitry-le-François, about 13 km in, is the place for a long break. Hunting season, from mid-September to the end of February, affects the fields and woods south of Vitry. Saint-Rémy-en-Bouzemont is a small village with no bed we could find, so arrange the night before you set out.

Safety on this stage

A long but easy day: 248 m of ascent in 34.9 km. The route crosses the Marne and its canals at Vitry-le-François, so take care on the bridges and at the town's road crossings. South of Vitry it uses farm tracks and D-roads between villages; walk facing traffic. In hunting season, from mid-September to the end of February, keep to the marked way.

Water and food

Water is moderate. OpenStreetMap shows bakeries in Vitry-en-Perthois, 7.5 km in, and in Vitry-le-François, where the town centre has the full range of shops about 600 m from the route; there is a bar at Huiron, about 19 km in. After that we could confirm no shop before Saint-Rémy-en-Bouzemont, which has a pharmacy. Fill up in Vitry for the last 20 km.
