Getting there and away
Châlons-en-Champagne station has TGV and TER services to Paris-Est, Reims, Épernay, Vitry-le-François and Nancy. Coole is a hamlet on the historic Via Francigena line up the Coole valley with no station and no bus we could confirm: the Champagne-Ardenne walking guide describes this 'tracé historique' as Châlons to Nuisement-sur-Coole 10 km, Nuisement to Coole 23 km, Coole to Dampierre 23 km, separate from the waymarked GR145 that goes by Vitry-le-François and the Der lake. Leaving Coole means a taxi back to Châlons or Vitry.
What the season does
April to October, but the stage data calls this one of the most exposed stages, with minimal shade and scarce water. In July and August the chalk plain radiates heat from mid-morning and there is nowhere to sit in shadow, so start at dawn. In spring and autumn it is wind and rain instead. Hunting is open on these vast fields from mid-September to the end of February. Champagne's harvest does not reach this arable country.
Safety on this stage
Very exposed with almost no shade, carry extra water, limited services: the stage data's three warnings are the whole story. The route follows the line of the Roman road on gravel tracks and joins the D4 at Coole, so walk facing traffic on the road sections. No shelter from lightning; watch summer forecasts. Ordinary care otherwise.
Water and food
Water is scarce, the only stage in France the stage data rates so. Fill every bottle in Châlons and carry food for the day and the evening. Écury-sur-Coole and Nuisement-sur-Coole are the villages passed; do not assume a shop is open. Coole itself has no services we could confirm. Two to three litres per person in summer.
