Getting there and away
Pontarlier station is the last on the French side: TER to Dole and Vallorbe, RegioExpress to Neuchâtel, TGV Lyria via Frasne. Jougne, 19 km from Pontarlier and 4.5 km from the Swiss border, has no station; Vallorbe, just over the border, has TGV Lyria Paris–Lausanne three times a day, RER Vaud trains to Lausanne and rush-hour TER to Frasne. Doubs Travel's walking package uses a minibus transfer from Jougne back to Besançon, so taxis exist; check locally for buses.
What the season does
June to September only, the narrowest window on the route so far. Jougne lies between 809 and 1,463 m and is a winter sports village with a ski resort; the stage notes warn of cold even in summer and of snow outside June to September. The Château de Joux page notes mist and sudden cold in spring and autumn and icy paths above 900 m in winter. Pontarlier's January minima average below freezing. Hunting from mid-September to the end of February affects the fir and spruce forests.
Safety on this stage
Mountain conditions, says the stage data: carry warm layers and waterproofs. The route threads the cluse below the Château de Joux, where the main road to Switzerland runs; use the marked path, not the road. Steep stairs and cliff-edge viewpoints at the château. Weather changes fast at 1,000 m; turn back if visibility drops.
Water and food
Water is moderate. Pontarlier has everything, including supermarkets on the main street. Les Fourgs, on the plateau, has a host listed by Pèlerinages de France and is the mid-stage village where a café is likely. Jougne has hotels with restaurants and a campsite. Carry two litres; there are no fountains in the forest and the plateau is dry limestone karst where rain sinks away rather than pooling.
