Getting there and away
Gy has Mobigo coaches LR612 to Besançon and LR601 to Vesoul. Besançon-Viotte is the city's main station, with TGVs Paris–Dijon–Besançon, TER trains to Dijon, Belfort and Lyon, and a line into Switzerland towards La Chaux-de-Fonds; a shuttle links it to the Besançon Franche-Comté TGV station about 10 km north. Mobigo lines 203 and 204 leave Besançon for Pontarlier, the latter via Ornans.
What the season does
May to September in the stage data, fully shaded on the wooded hills into the city. The citadel page says May, June and September are ideal for the climb; July and August are warm and popular with families; winters are cold and grey and the exposed ramparts catch every wind. Peregrines and Alpine swifts are on the cliffs in summer. Hunting from mid-September to the end of February affects the forest sections before the suburbs. Book city beds ahead on summer weekends.
Safety on this stage
Hilly approach to Besançon, says the stage data, with 525 m of ascent. The forest tracks are good; the last kilometres are suburban roads with pavements, so switch to town habits. The climb to the citadel is steep and the culture page advises carrying water in summer; some rampart walkways have low parapets, so keep children close. Hunting season applies in the woods from mid-September. Ordinary city care around the station and the river at night.
Water and food
Water is moderate. Gy has a hotel-restaurant, so buy or order breakfast the night before. Cussey-sur-l'Ognon, on the way, has an auberge according to the LightFoot guide, which is the only likely refill before the city. The hills have no fountains. Besançon has every shop and café from the outskirts to the Doubs loop, and the youth hostel has facilities. Carry a full bottle for the wooded climb and another for the citadel if you visit.
