Getting there and away
Besançon-Viotte station has TGV and TER services and the shuttle to the TGV station. Ornans has no railway, but Mobigo line 204 Pontarlier–Besançon runs via Ornans every day of the year, with up to 14 return journeys between 05:45 and 19:40 serving twelve communes, so you can bus back to Besançon or on to Pontarlier. Line 203 is the direct Besançon–Pontarlier service without Ornans.
What the season does
May to September in the stage data, fully shaded through the Jura foothills and the Loue valley. Spring water levels make the Loue spectacular but the limestone paths muddy; summer is pleasant under the trees. Ornans fills on summer weekends for the Courbet museum and the river, so book. Hunting from mid-September to the end of February affects the forests. Mobigo line 204 runs every day of the year, so a bus back to Besançon is always an option.
Safety on this stage
Significant climbing and rocky paths in places, says the stage data: 668 m of ascent on limestone that is slippery when wet, with 578 m of descent into the Loue valley that is hard on knees. Keep to the waymarked GR145; the plateau tracks and forest paths have roots and loose stone. In hunting season wear something bright and respect signs. The Loue riverbank in Ornans is unfenced in places; ordinary care with children and after rain.
Water and food
Water is abundant, the best-supplied stage since Arras. Besançon has everything, from the station to the old town. The plateau villages have cafés, though hours vary. Ornans is a small town with bakeries, restaurants and shops along the river, and the gîtes have kitchens: Les Muses has a fully equipped kitchen for its fifteen guests. Buy for the next stage here, because the climb to Pontarlier passes only Mouthier and Ouhans.
