Getting there and away
Neither end has a railway station in town. To reach San Miniato, use San Miniato-Fucecchio on the Florence–Pisa line, down in the valley. Gambassi Terme is served by Autolinee Toscane buses: line 33 runs from Empoli station via Castelfiorentino and Certaldo (both on the Empoli–Siena line) to Gambassi and Montaione, and line 80 links Castelfiorentino with Gambassi and Montaione and stops at Santa Maria a Chianni, right by the pilgrim hostel. Buses are infrequent, so check the at-bus timetable before you depend on one. Pisa airport is the nearest hub via Pisa Centrale and Empoli.
What the season does
The stage data narrow the window to April to June and September to October, with partial shade and moderate water — this is where the Tuscany of cypress rows and open ridges begins, and the regional page says most of the day is on dirt roads. In summer heat the ridges are exposed and the climb out of San Miniato is hot; in a wet spring the white roads turn to clay and cling to your boots. May, June, September and October are the regional advice's own recommended months. Gambassi has thermal springs, and its few beds fill on warm weekends.
Safety on this stage
The stage data flags undulating terrain and cumulative climb, and the regional page shows over 60 per cent of the day on unpaved roads: the danger is exhaustion in heat rather than any single obstacle. Wet clay on the descents is slippery. The route uses quiet lanes and farm tracks, with only short stretches of provincial road near Coiano and the approach to Gambassi where you should walk facing traffic. Dogs at isolated farms are best passed calmly.
Water and food
This is the first stage with moderate rather than abundant water, and the stage notes warn of limited water between villages. The regional page confirms it: refreshments only at Calenzano and near the ruined Pieve di Coiano. Leave San Miniato with at least a litre and a half, refill at Coiano, and expect nothing until the Pieve di Chianni and Gambassi Terme itself, which has bars and a fountain in the piazza.

The pilgrim stop is the Ostello Sigerico, in the former convent beside the twelfth-century Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta at Chianni, ten metres off the route on the Volterrana road just before Gambassi. Run by the Associazione il Cammino di Sigerico since 2011, it has forty-six beds in rooms of two to a dormitory, open year round, dinner and breakfast on site, credenziale required (and issued there if you have none). Individuals can arrive without booking; groups should call. Gambassi Terme town has hotels and B&Bs if the hostel is full.
