Getting there and away
Altopascio station on the Florence–Lucca line has regional trains in both directions and a bus interchange. At the far end the station is called San Miniato-Fucecchio, on the Leopolda line between Florence and Pisa (Empoli is the next stop towards Florence); it is a simple two-track halt down on the valley floor, not in the hill town, so allow for the climb or ask locally about the bus up. From either end Pisa airport is the hub, reached via Pisa Centrale on the same Leopolda line.
What the season does
The stage data give March to June and September to November with partial shade. The first half crosses the Cerbaie woods and the Fucecchio marsh, which are pleasant in spring and autumn but humid and insect-heavy in summer; the second half crosses the open Arno plain, where there is no shade at all in July and August. The regional page rates the leg demanding for its length, and the stage data adds that the final climb to San Miniato is steep — worse at the end of a hot day. Truffle season in November brings crowds to San Miniato's market weekends, so book then.
Safety on this stage
The one real hazard is the finish: after a long flat day the climb into San Miniato is steep and comes when you are tired. The regional page puts more than half the leg on unpaved farm tracks, which turn to sticky mud after rain around the marsh; the Medici bridge at Ponte a Cappiano and the walk through Fucecchio involve short stretches of road with traffic. Otherwise this is a straightforward day.
Water and food
The stage data rates water abundant, though the regional page lists no specific fountains. In practice the villages do the work: Galleno and Ponte a Cappiano have bars, Fucecchio is a proper town with shops and fountains, and San Miniato Basso at the foot of the hill has everything. The Cerbaie woods and the marsh have nothing, so leave Altopascio with a full bottle and refill in Fucecchio before the plain.
