Getting there and away
Reims station is the start, with TGVs to Paris-Est and TER trains across Champagne. Trépail is a Grand Cru village in the Montagne de Reims with no station and no bus we could confirm; the official GR145 stage from Reims ends at Verzy, 20.5 km, before continuing to Condé-sur-Marne, so many walkers stop there instead. Leaving Trépail means a taxi to Reims or Châlons, or walking on. Check with your host about lifts during the harvest, when the villages are busy.
What the season does
April to October, and the stage data rates the stage fully shaded through the forest of the Montagne de Reims, so summer is pleasant on the ridge. The harvest is the seasonal event: in 2026 the Comité Champagne authorised picking from 12 August, with Ambonnay from 10 August, and the season ran about ten days; pickers fill every spare bed in the Grand Cru villages, so avoid arriving unannounced then. Verzy's twisted beeches are a spring and autumn highlight. Hunting from mid-September affects the forest.
Safety on this stage
Hilly terrain through vineyards, says the stage data: vineyard tracks are stony and steep in places, and during the harvest tractors and trailers use them constantly, so step aside early. In the forest keep to the waymarked GR route; hunting is open from mid-September. The Verzenay lighthouse and the twisted beeches of Verzy attract visitors and cars at weekends. Nothing technical otherwise.
Water and food
Water is moderate. Reims is the place to buy everything. The route runs via Verzy, a village with services; Trépail is small and evening food depends on your host. There are no fountains in the vineyards, and the forest is dry. Carry two litres in summer, more during a hot harvest.

Our directory has no listing at Trépail, and this is the thinnest bed on the Champagne section. The 2014 LightFoot guide recorded a chambre d'hôtes in the village and the mairie's number, with others in Ambonnay and Les Petites-Loges; confirm before relying on any of them. RP51's leaflet, given out at the cathedral desk in Reims, and the FFVF booklet are the current sources. Verzy, on the official stage, is the fallback if Trépail is full.
