Getting there and away
Neither end has a working station. Clairvaux has no public transport. Châteauvillain's nearest railway point, Bricon on the Paris–Belfort line, has been closed to passengers since 1997 apart from brief reopenings during viaduct works, and is now served by a substitute bus stop at Bricon (La Poste); Chaumont is the nearest full station. Ask at the Châteauvillain mairie about current buses. Bar-sur-Aube, behind you, is the last easy rail exit.
What the season does
April to October, fully shaded through the forests of southern Champagne. This is prime hunting country and the season runs from mid-September to the end of February; the LightFoot guide notes the woods of this section are working forest. The deer park at Châteauvillain is a year-round attraction. Summer is comfortable under the trees; spring mud is the main nuisance.
Safety on this stage
Hilly forest terrain, says the stage data: 421 m of ascent on tracks that can be muddy and rutted after rain, with roots and stones underfoot. This is working forest and hunting is open from mid-September to the end of February, so wear something bright, stay on the GR route and respect any 'chasse en cours' sign, especially at weekends. Road sections are quiet D-roads between hamlets; walk facing traffic. Châteauvillain is a small fortified town with a deer park; ordinary care in the streets.
Water and food
Water is moderate. Clairvaux has almost nothing to buy, so carry the day's food from Bar-sur-Aube. The hamlets in the forest have no shops and the tracks pass no fountains; the LightFoot guide lists only scattered chambres d'hôtes in the villages of this section. Châteauvillain is a small town and we could not confirm its shop hours, so ask your host what will be open when you arrive and where to buy breakfast for the long stage to Langres.
