Getting there and away
No railway serves this stage. Wisques is six kilometres from Saint-Omer station, so a taxi or lift there connects you to TER trains for Lille, Calais and Arras. Thérouanne lies 13 km south of Saint-Omer and 10 km west of Aire-sur-la-Lys; it has no station and we could not confirm a bus timetable, so treat public transport out of Thérouanne as something to check locally at the EDEN gîte or the mairie. Saint-Omer remains the nearest rail exit for both ends.
What the season does
April to October in the stage data, with only partial shade and exposed sections in open farmland, so this is a day for sun cover in July and August and a windproof layer in spring and autumn. The EDEN pilgrim gîte in Thérouanne opens from 15 March to 15 October only, which fixes the practical season for a cheap bed; Tuesday is market day in the town. From mid-September the fields are hunted, mostly at weekends, until the end of February.
Safety on this stage
The stage data flags exposed sections in open farmland: heat, wind and rain all find you on the Artois plateau. The route uses farm tracks and quiet D-roads, so walk facing traffic and keep off the verges of the busier roads around Thérouanne, where the LightFoot guide notes a petrol station junction at the town entrance. Waymarking is the GR red-and-white. No technical ground; the main risk is simply weather on open land.
Water and food
Water is moderate. Wisques has no shops, so leave with a full bottle and whatever the abbey provided. Villages on the way are small; do not count on a café. Thérouanne is a proper small town: the Saint-Omer tourist office lists bakeries, bars, cafés, brasseries, chip shops, food stores, supermarkets and banks, and the EDEN gîte has a fully equipped kitchen, so you can cook. Buy tomorrow's lunch here too, because Amettes has little.
