Getting there and away
Vetralla station at La Cura is on the FL3 Rome–Viterbo line, with hourly regionals off-peak and a two-hourly service at weekends and in summer. Capranica–Sutri station, at Capranica Scalo below the old town, serves both Capranica and Sutri on the same line, with Trenitalia FL3 trains to Roma Ostiense and Tiburtina. Cotral's Viterbo–Roma Saxa Rubra buses stop in both Vetralla and Capranica along the Cassia. Rome Fiumicino is the airport hub, reached from Roma Tiburtina or Ostiense by FL1.
What the season does
The stage data give March to June and September to November with full shade — the route runs through hazelnut orchards and the Etruscan sunken lanes cut into the tuff, which stay cool and damp. That dampness is the point in wet weather: the association's notes for the Vetralla–Sutri leg warn that the deep-cut valley sections become dangerous in heavy rain, so check the forecast before you commit. Hazelnut harvest in September brings tractors onto the lanes. Capranica is a small town with few pilgrim-specific beds, so plan this night rather than improvise.
Safety on this stage
One serious crossing: the association's notes flag the SS2 Cassia at roughly km 8.3, a very busy road with heavy vehicles — cross where you can see in both directions and never walk along it. The sunken vie cave are narrow, dark and slippery after rain, with sheer tuff walls; take them slowly and do not attempt them in a storm. Otherwise the day is short and easy.
Water and food
Abundant in the stage data, and the association's notes say fountains are present in inhabited centres. There is no village between Vetralla and Capranica, so fill up in Vetralla before the orchards and carry a litre. Capranica has fountains in the old town and bars on the main street; Capranica Scalo, at the station, has shops.
