Getting there and away
Shepherds Well station, on the Dover branch of the Chatham Main Line, has about one Southeastern train an hour each way. Dover Priory has hourly trains to London Charing Cross via Tonbridge, London Victoria via Chatham, London St Pancras by the high-speed line, and Ramsgate; the ferry port is a 25-minute walk from the station, and from 27 July 2026 a Stagecoach bus links the Port of Dover, Dover Priory, Tesco and Whitfield. Only P&O carries foot passengers to Calais, on a few sailings a day: book ahead, check in at the Eastern Docks at least 90 minutes before departure, and expect a shuttle bus through security. Foot passengers leave the ship about 30 minutes after docking.
What the season does
April to September is the window in the stage data. May to September brings the best Channel visibility and sea light for the clifftop finish; summer weekends and school holidays are the busiest on the heights. Autumn gives dramatic skies but wind is a constant up here whatever the month. The chalk grassland below the castle holds Adonis and chalkhill blue butterflies and orchids in June. If you plan to cross the same day, remember the P&O check-in cut-off; the Confraternity suggests spending the night in Dover and taking a morning ferry if you would otherwise land in Calais on a Monday-to-Thursday evening, when the port-to-town bus stops at 7pm.
Safety on this stage
The stage notes warn of a steep descent into Dover and windy clifftop paths. The chalk is crumbly and undercut, and erosion along these cliffs has accelerated in recent decades, so keep well back from the edge and off the fenced margins whatever the view. Gusts on the heights can unbalance a loaded pack. The keep and tunnels of the castle have steep, dim spiral stairs if you visit. Inside the port the walk to the terminal can feel remote with few pedestrians about; follow the signed foot-passenger route rather than cutting across traffic lanes.
Water and food
Water is abundant. Shepherdswell has a village shop on the main street, and Dover is a full town with supermarkets, cafés and pubs from the outskirts to the seafront. On the cliffs the National Trust visitor centre has a restaurant if you divert to it. Luggage must stay with you on board, and check-in closes 90 minutes before sailing, so buy any snacks for the crossing in town before you walk to the Eastern Docks. There are no fountains on the downland section itself.
