Getting there and away
Pavia is on the Milan–Genoa main line with lines to Alessandria, Vercelli, Mantua and Stradella; Milan is about half an hour. Santa Cristina e Bissone has its own station on the single-track, non-electrified Pavia–Codogno line, with Trenord regional trains on the Pavia–Codogno run, and Belgioioso, on the route, is on the same line; the source stage page confirms you can reach Santa Cristina by train on the Codogno–Pavia line or by bus. That makes this an easy stage to shorten or to leave from.
What the season does
Best months are April to June and September to October; the stage data drops July and August. This is the flat Lombard plain between the Ticino and the Po, irrigated fields and poplar groves with minimal shade, and the stage notes warn of limited services. Spring and autumn are mild and green; summer is hot and humid with mosquitoes near the canals. Santa Cristina's parish hostel opens only from 1 April to 15 October, which fixes the practical season for this night.
Safety on this stage
An easy, flat 22 km. The source stage page's one warning is the crossing of the SS617 between Via Scarpone and Via Fratelli Cervi at about km 6, leaving Pavia's suburbs, where traffic is fast. After that it is farm lanes and canal banks with agricultural vehicles, and the Ticino bridge leaving Pavia is shared with traffic. Heat and sun are the real risk in summer with minimal shade; there is nothing technical.
Water and food
Water is marked moderate, and the stage notes tell you to carry food and water because services are limited. The source stage page says fountains are present in every inhabited centre, which on this route means Belgioioso, Torre de' Negri and Costa de' Nobili, with long open stretches between. Leave Pavia with two litres and lunch, refill at Belgioioso, which has bars and shops, and again at Costa de' Nobili. Santa Cristina is a small village: buy your evening food before you arrive.
