Getting there and away
Fiorenzuola d'Arda is on the Milan–Bologna line with Trenitalia Tper regional trains. Fidenza, at the end, is a bigger junction on the same line: hourly regional connections along the Via Emilia to Piacenza, Parma and Bologna, regional trains to Milan, all daytime Intercity trains on the Milan–Bologna line, plus branches to Cremona (hourly), Salsomaggiore Terme and Fornovo, the last being the line that shadows tomorrow's stage. Fidenza is therefore the obvious place to start or end an Emilian section, with Milan and Bologna both about an hour away.
What the season does
Best months are April to June and September to October; the stage data drops July and August. The stage is 22 km of flat farmland with partial shade, gentler than the Po days but still hot and humid in summer. Spring gives the Cistercian abbey at Chiaravalle della Colomba in green fields; autumn is harvest and mild. This is also the last flat day: from Fidenza the route turns south into the hills, so the seasonal calculus changes tomorrow.
Safety on this stage
An easy, flat stage. The source stage page's one flagged point is a hairpin bend at about km 20.5 leaving the Ponte Sigerico, where you are briefly on a road with poor sightlines; keep in and cross carefully. Elsewhere the route uses farm lanes with agricultural traffic and short stretches of the Via Emilia. Sun and heat are the risks in summer with only partial shade. Fidenza is a small city with an easy arrival at the cathedral.
Water and food
Water is marked abundant, and the source stage page confirms fountains in every inhabited centre: Chiaravalle della Colomba, San Rocco, Castione Marchesi and Bastelli. Chiaravalle, about a third of the way, has the abbey and a bar; Castione Marchesi has a fountain by the church. Carry one bottle and refill at each. Fiorenzuola has shops for the start; Fidenza has supermarkets near the station and cafés on Piazza Garibaldi.
